Spicy Tuna

Characteristics of balanced pitta vs imbalanced pitta

In my family, when one of us is feeling grumpy and agitated, we call ourselves "spicy tuna." This usually happens when we have too much going on and not enough space or support. The pressure builds, the heat starts to rise, and the blood boils.

Pitta dosha is a combination of fire and water. These two elements bring many gifts to the world. At its best, fire illuminates and lights the way and water smooths the path and provides cohesion. People with a lot of pitta in their constitution make great leaders because they can be focused, passionate, and inspiring, and they can help unite a team around a common goal.

Fire and water must be respected because they can easily consume everything in their path. If you ever become "spicy tuna" you know that there is a fine line between fire that fuels and transforms and fire that destroys, and between water that soothes and water that rages.

Without tending to the fire and allowing the water to flow, the spark of passion can easily ignite into anger. Determination can cross the line into perfectionism. Focus can flip into impatience and discernment can easily veer into judgement. The hard work that typically serves you can quickly evolve into overworking and lead to burnout.

If you have a lot of fire and water in your constitution, you are likely more affected by the hot, humid weather we've been having this summer than those who have more space, wind, or earth in their constitution. What you might not know is that the foods you eat, the yoga practices you choose, and the way you structure your day can either fan the flames or illuminate your gifts.

We each have gifts that need tending and support. Do you want to learn more about balanced pitta vs spicy pitta? I'm leading a workshop on Sunday, July 28th from 4 - 6 pm online all about how your yoga practice, nutrition, self-care, and lifestyle can become tools to enhance the radiance of pitta and to prevent you from becoming a spicy tuna.

Will I see you there?
