Throwing Spaghetti at the Wall

Do you ever feel like you are throwing spaghetti at the wall guessing what you need in order to feel your best or to help you heal? Or maybe following the latest trend because it worked for a friend (or a celebrity) but it isn't really helping you?

When you know how to listen to your body, and when you understand how you are affected by your environment, you don't have to guess.

The first step is to understand your constitution so you know what you need in order to thrive.

People with a lot of earth and water in their constitution tend to be grounded, loving, supportive, generous people. They also have a tendency to accumulate earth and water in their bodies, which can lead to an erosion of boundaries so they get stuck and can't let go.

People with a lot of fire in their constitution tend to be smart, focused, disciplined, and inspirational. They also tend to get spicy, which can show up as agitation, sharpness, impatience, and indigestion.

People with a lot of air and space tend to be creative, spontaneous, and open-minded. These elements are also drying and depleting, which can cause people with a lot of air and space in their constitution to have anxiety, constipation, and difficulty concentrating.

We are each made of a unique combination of the five elements, which means we all need different things in order to maintain balance. It also means that we are each affected differently by our environment. For example, some people love hot, humid summer days, and others feel like they are melting. My grandmother wore turtlenecks and polyester pants all summer long because she was always cold. I'm overheating when the mercury rises above 75 degrees. I used to think this was just about the weather, but now I know that it is actually about what we need in order to thrive.

Balancing the elements ensures that our gifts shine. The reason I don't like hot, humid weather is because I have a fair amount of fire in my constitution. If I let myself get overheated, I will be (as we say in my family) spicy tuna. Now I know I need to avoid my beloved hot sauce in the summer and incorporate lots of cooling foods, yoga practices, and sense-care practices into my daily routine so that the gifts of the fire are amplified. If I don't, the fire can rage and scorch everything in its path. Can anyone relate?
